PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Zartaj Gul has obtained transit bail to prevent her arrest in connection with the May 9 events, following a dramatic episode at the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday.
Gul approached the high court earlier in the day seeking protection from arrest and refused to leave the PHC premises as a substantial police force was stationed outside, anticipating her potential arrest.
After significant commotion, Chief Justice (CJ) Mohammad Ibrahim Khan of the PHC, who convened the court to hear Gul's plea late in the evening, prohibited the police from apprehending the female politician.
CJ Ibrahim commented during the hearing, "It is not our tradition to arrest a woman," expressing dissatisfaction with the heavy police deployment outside the court.
He pointed out that the female politician did not engage in any violent acts warranting such a large police contingent. "If a solution cannot be reached, both of us should resign," CJ Ibrahim stated, addressing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's advocate general.
The former federal minister had desperately sought protection against arrest, refusing to leave the court's premises. She also apologized for the violent incidents that occurred after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan on May 9 of the previous year.
The police reportedly increased their presence outside the court, including deploying six additional female police officials, and Ababeel Squad personnel patrolled the area.
Gul, along with 51 other PTI leaders, including Murad Saeed, Ali Amin Gandapur, Hammad Azhar, and Omar Ayub, faces charges in a case related to the attack on Gujranwala Cantt on May 9.
An anti-terrorism court had issued directives to seize the properties of the mentioned politicians.
In an address to journalists at the PHC, Gul broke into tears, expressing the feeling of being at war rather than participating in general elections due to the heavy police presence. She assured her voters not to worry and stood firmly with her ideology, placing hope in the judiciary for justice.

Gul revealed that her nomination papers were rejected by the election commission, emphasizing that she had not committed any crime and merely wanted to exercise her right to represent DG Khan. She appealed to the legal fraternity for justice, urging them to order the police not to arrest her. The Insaf Lawyers Forum members resisted attempts by female cops to arrest Gul at the PHC's bar room, leading to the room being locked after media persons and police were asked to leave.
