On Monday, the Pakistani nation commemorated the eleventh death anniversary of one of the legendary fighter pilots of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Mohammad Mahmood Alam.
Air Commodore Mohammad Mahmood Alam, celebrated for his extraordinary feat during the 1965 war, was honored by the Pakistan Air Force on his anniversary. Alam gained renown for downing five Indian Air Force jets in under one minute, a record that remains unmatched to this day.
In a statement, the Air Force highlighted Alam's remarkable achievement on September 7, 1965, when he shot down five Indian fighter jets while piloting his F-86 Sabre jet plane, earning him the title of "Ace in a Day."
During a span of 11 days, Alam accumulated a total of nine kills and damaged two enemy aircraft, earning him the prestigious 'Sitara-e-Jurat' with BAR for his exceptional performance during the 1965 war.
Hailing from Calcutta, India, Alam was the eldest among 11 siblings. His family later relocated to East Pakistan, where he joined the military in 1952 and became a commissioned officer on October 2, 1953.
Alam was also bestowed with the 'Sitara-e-Jurrat', the third-highest military award, in recognition of his bravery. A revered war hero, Alam was the first fighter pilot of the Pakistan Air Force and is prominently honored in the hall of fame at the PAF Museum in Karachi.
Having served the PAF for 29 years, Alam retired as Air Commodore in 1982. Known as the 'little dragon', he passed away in Karachi on March 18, 2013, after battling a prolonged illness.
